Question 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why ?

It's best to think about a distribution company while still planning the film, since distribution companies make it clearer what the film would eventually look like to the audience. Also help you get a rough target audience idea.

The production company takes care of the advertisement of the film, such as posters, trailers etc.

 They try to keep the film on the market for as long as possible and get more audience for it. They also take care of the theatrical distribution of a film - shipping the film prints to specific countries.

They buy stock for re-sale unlike agents who get commission. Distributors, merchants or dealers are usually, but not always assigned  to a specific area of  the marketplace . In order for distribution companies to distribute a product, they have to have bought a license before hand which allows them to do so, otherwise their work is illegal.

For the film my group made, we decided that our distribution company would be Optimum Releasing, which is a company part of Studio Canal .

We have chosen this company, as it has not only distributed numerous other horror films in the UK but also sponsored some. It is a known company and very popular when it comes to this genre. A popular and successful film distributed by this company is  ''The Orphan'', which is about an innocent child who has a double identity just like the antagonist in our film '' In Your Mind'' . The total gross at the box office for ''the Orphan'' is $41,596,251. It has been released in the UK on the 7 August 2009.


Films like '' Attack the Block'' which are low budget projects, like ours trough good distribution by this company have become popular even out of the UK despite the low success in the US.
Other films distributed by Optimum Releasing are '' The Awakening'' , classic horrors like ''Dracula Prince Of Darkness'' and ''Behind The Mask'' . The company knows how to target the right audience for this specific genre and is a good choice for a distributor of a fresh film production project such as ours. The posters, trailers and adverts made by them have always caught the viewer's eye and have been  trusted choice to see. This company is a professional in the business of film and is very well known as I've said, it is multi functional and not only distributes but sponsors and produces films too. It has many international  branches, in Germany, the US and France, which could only mean that our film would get more views around the world and become more popular. They are a very experienced and reliable company which viewers trust to only distribute the best .
